Learn About Vertices, Edges and Faces
Have you ever been given a gift box or party hat? 🎁They're all 3D shapes.
3D shapes are made up of vertices, edges, and faces!
Vertices are the pointy bits or the corners where edges meet. Edges are the lines around a shape. Faces are the flat sides that you touch when you hold a shape.Let's look at how many vertices, edges, and faces different 3D shapes have. 👇
Cubes
Cubes have 6 square faces. If you glue 6 square faces together, they becomes a cube with 8 vertices and 12 edges.
Rectangular Prisms
Here's a rectangular shaped gift box:
It's made up of 6 rectangular faces. When you join the sides together, it becomes a rectangular prism with 8 vertices and 12 edges.
Tip: All cubes are rectangular prisms, but not all rectangular prisms are cubes. It's kind of like how all squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares.
Triangular Prisms
Here's a triangular shaped gift box:
It's made up of 5 faces (2 are triangles, 3 are rectangles). Triangular prisms have 6 vertices and 9 edges! Can you count them?
Pyramids
Pyramids are made up of 5 faces (4 are triangles, 1 is a square). When you join the faces together, it becomes a square-based pyramid with 5 vertices and 8 edges!
Cylinder
Cylinders has 2 circular faces and 1 surface. Curved surfaces doesn't count as faces. Faces are flat. When you wrap the surface around the circles, it becomes a cylinder with 2 edges and 0 vertices. There are no sharp, pointy bits in a cylinder!
Cones
Cones like this party hat are made up of 1 surface and 1 circular face.When you wrap the surface around the circle it becomes a cone with 1 vertex and 1 edge.
Spheres
Spheres have 0 faces, 0 edges and 0 vertices. 
How would you gift wrap a sphere? It's tough without crumpling paper.
