UK Cabinet meeting at Middleport Pottery site in Stoke-on-Trent on 12 May 2022
Middleport Pottery was chosen as the ideal venue for the event given the important role the site plays in the regeneration of the surrounding local area.
Stephen Musgrave, Chair of the Re-Form Heritage Board of Trustees said:
“The Cabinet’s choice of Middleport Pottery as the site of today’s meeting emphasises Stoke-on-Trent’s significance as a centre of industrial heritage, vibrant communities, and successful modern businesses.
The Prime Minister was able to see first hand the impact that long term commitment and investment can make in restoring jobs and pride in challenged communities such as Burslem.”
After 130 years, Middleport Pottery remains home to the world-famous Burleigh pottery, and is also an award-winning visitor destination that offers heritage and factory tours and hosts a range of retail offers, including the Burleigh shop.
As well as undertaking the scheduled Cabinet Meeting, the Prime Minister was able to explore the heritage areas of the UK’s last working Victorian Pottery in continuous production. Ministers also greeted local community and business leaders at the site.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson said:
"I am delighted to have brought my Cabinet to the fantastic Middleport Pottery at the heart of Stoke on Trent.
“The regeneration of Middleport is a prime example of levelling up in action - taking a 130-year-old pottery and turning it into an incredible heritage site with so much to offer to the local community.
“I am grateful to the team at Middleport and Re-form Heritage for hosting us and allowing us to bring the Queen’s speech to the people of Stoke-on-Trent.”
With the cost of living crisis currently dominating the headlines, and levelling up very much on the agenda for the government, Middleport Pottery in Stoke-on-Trent recently hosted a regional cabinet meeting (12 May), with the story appearing in both the national press and local media.
The Pottery, founded in 1889, played host to PM Boris Johnson as well as senior ministers that included chancellor Rishi Sunak, home secretary Priti Patel, education secretary Nadhim Zahawi; health secretary Sajid Javid; housing and levelling up secretary Michael Gove, international trade secretary Anne-Marie Trevelyan and government efficiency secretary Jacob Rees-Mogg.
During the meeting, Michael Gove pointed to Stoke-on-Trent as an historic world-renowned success for business and innovation but said there is more to do here and across the UK to better level up education, health, and housing.
Prior to the meeting, cabinet ministers met Jim Norman, managing director of Burgess & Leigh (Burleigh & Poole Pottery), Dean Barlow, operations director of Denby Pottery, Debbie Hill, production manager of Burgess & Leigh and three apprentices, at a business and community event also held at the Pottery.
Jim Norman told GiftsandHome.net: “It was a memorable day for the staff at Burleigh, some of whom had the opportunity to chat with Boris Johnson and the rest of the cabinet. Our production manager, Deborah Hill, proudly introduced two graduate apprentices and one current apprentice – Leanne Bourne, Megan Ferriday and Jack Harris – to the visitors at a business and community event held on the canal side.”
Continued Jim: “After the cabinet meeting, design and development manager Alison Howell and I had the opportunity of a private meeting and tour with Anne-Marie Trevelyan, Secretary of State for International Trade, to discuss exporting and to showcase the unique craftsmanship that makes Burleigh so special.”
Senior ministers descend on Stoke-on-Trent as Boris Johnson hosts 'away day' in the Potteries
Top Government ministers descended on Stoke-on-Trent today as Boris Johnson hosted an 'away day' in the Potteries.
The Prime Minister held a cabinet meeting in the city this morning, attended by senior government figures – including Health Secretary Sajid Javid, Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Levelling Up Secretary Michael Gove.
The meeting aimed to highlight the 'levelling up' opportunities in the city and outline what the government is doing to tackle the rising cost of living.
MPs then carried out a number of ministerial visits to various locations in the city, including Churchill China, Burleigh Pottery, Alton Towers and Stoke-on-Trent College.
During his visit to the city, Boris Johnson told StokeonTrentLive: "In the short term, as we deal with the impacts of Covid on the global economy, we've got to help people with the cost of living and there's all sorts of things we're doing to get people through this particular period, helping with their energy costs, their food costs – there's £9.1 billion that we're putting into energy alone.
"But that's just money to help people right now. What we also need to do, and this is where levelling up comes in, we need to make sure that we're putting in the things that will deliver growth and prosperity for the long-term. And that is all about jobs."
The Prime Minister added: "But the best way to get through an economic period like this one is to have high skill, high wage jobs. We're seeing great companies here in Stoke-on-Trent doing so well, they not only hired people last year but they want to hire more.
"I'm not going to pretend that this period isn't going to have its challenges. Because it certainly is. But we can get through it in just the way we got through Covid. When you look at what's going to happen here in Stoke-on-Trent – this is a former industrial heartland of the UK, and it's going to be again, in many ways it is."
Elsewhere, International Trade Secretary Anne-Marie Trevelyan visited historic pottery firm Burleigh, which is based in Middleport, to see how Government trade deals are helping the company to sell its products around the world.
The 171-year-old business – which turned over £2.5 million last year – sold its products into 82 countries in 2021.
Managing director Jim Norman told Ms Trevelyan that the company's recent export success was only possible due to the new free trade deals which have been negotiated with Japan, Australia and New Zealand.
Mr Norman said: "Burleigh has exported to global markets since it's inception in 1851 and we are keen to continue benefiting from free trade around the world.
"It has been fantastic to show the Trade Secretary around our pottery today and to thank her and her department for their support and advice that maintains and develops our long-established tradition of exporting."
Ms Trevelyan said: "It is great to see British businesses exporting across the world thanks to our brilliant free trade agreements. Businesses who export support higher paying jobs, and help grow the economy across the UK.
"Seeing Burleigh succeed shows the high demand for quality British products, and I will continue to champion great British exporting success stories in every sector."
Work and Pensions Secretary Therese Coffey helped to launch Alton Towers' summer recruitment campaign during her visit to the popular theme park.
The Alton-based attraction is currently recruiting 300 workers ahead of its peak summer holiday period. Vacancies include ride hosts and operators, food and beverage roles, housekeeping and hotel staff.
Ms Coffey said: "It has been great to meet people who have started work at Alton Towers in the past month. They have still got 300 jobs to fill and hospitality is a great industry.
"One of the things that's really impressed me today is how flexible Alton Towers is as an employer, and how keen they are to invest in people. The tourism offering is fantastic around this whole area."
Boris Johnson swaps Westminster for Middleport Pottery for away day cabinet meeting
Cabinet ministers swapped Westminster for Stoke-on-Trent for their latest meeting. Boris Johnson hosted a meeting of the most senior members of his government at Middleport Pottery on Thursday, in order to see 'a prime example of levelling up in action'.
The cabinet discussed how proposed legislation in the Queen's Speech, including planning reform and the Levelling Up and Regeneration Bill, would benefit areas such as Stoke-on-Trent. Mr Johnson has previously held cabinet meetings in other cities around the country, including Sunderland and Bristol.
Stoke-on-Trent has been described as a 'litmus test' for the government's levelling up agenda, and the city has been allocated £56 million of government funding for a series of regeneration schemes, including Etruscan Square in Hanley and the Goods Yard next to Stoke Station.
The government says that the proposals included in the Queen's Speech will further boost Stoke-on-Trent, by supporting the creation of more jobs and homes and improve living standards.
The visit to North Staffordshire came as the government has come under increasing pressure to do more to assist struggling families hit by the cost-of-living crisis. And news of 50 more Partygate fines for Covid breaches in Downing Street broke shortly before the cabinet meeting took place.
