Boris Johnson's visit to Churchill China
Boris Johnson's visit to Churchill China 12/05/2022
The Prime Minister visited Churchill China in Tunstall during a visit to Stoke-on-Trent
Boris Johnson says the government's 'massive sprint' for low carbon energy will safeguard the future of Stoke-on-Trent's ceramics industry. The Prime Minister was given a tour of Churchill China in Tunstall, before hosting a cabinet meeting at Middleport Pottery, during a visit to North Staffordshire on Thursday.
He was told of Churchill China's recent success at bouncing back from the pandemic, with its revenues rising from £36.4 million to £60.8 million in 2021. But the British Ceramic Confederation has previously called for more government support to help the industry decarbonise, warning that jobs could otherwise be lost to other countries, with the UK set to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Mr Johnson says the government's drive to expand off-shore wind and nuclear power would help both households and energy-intensive industries such as ceramics.
He said: "What ceramics needs is dependable base-load power, that is cheap. One of the problems we've got in the UK, if you look at the mix of energy prices compared to other European countries, we've typically disadvantaged manufacturing in favour of the consumer.
"Now both are facing massive increases in prices. We've got to do something to make sure we have high-energy intensive industries such as the ones here in Stoke have dependable sources of affordable energy. They do it in Germany – or they did up until recently – we have to do the same in the UK."
Churchill China recently announced plans to invest £1.2 million on a solar energy project at its Stoke-on-Trent factory in a bid to reduce its carbon footprint.
The BCC has said that the industry as a whole needs government support in developing and rolling-out low-carbon technologies, such as hydrogen, carbon capture and bioenergy, to help manufacturers contribute to the net zero target.
Mr Johnson insisted the government's national energy policies would support the ceramics industry.
He said: "We're making a massive sprint now for low-carbon energy. The UK uses around 100GW, that's what our consumption is – 50 GW of that can come from off-short wind, and that's what we're going to get to by 2030. We're the world leader in devising these off-shore wind turbines.
