Mean, Mode, Median & Range

 Mean, Mode, Median & Range

Mean, median, mode, and range are all different ways to analyze a set of data, providing different insights into the data's characteristics. The mean is the average of all values, the median is the middle value when the data is sorted, the mode is the most frequent value, and the range is the difference between the largest and smallest values.

Mean:
  • The average of all values in a data set.
  • To calculate, sum all the values and divide by the number of values.
  • Example: For the data set 2, 4, 6, 8, the mean is (2 + 4 + 6 + 8) / 4 = 5.

Median:
  • The middle value in a sorted data set.
  • If there are an even number of values, the median is the average of the two middle values.
  • Example: For the sorted data set 2, 4, 6, 8, the median is (4 + 6) / 2 = 5.

Mode:
  • The value that appears most frequently in a data set.
  • A data set can have no mode, one mode, or multiple modes.
  • Example: For the data set 2, 2, 4, 6, 8, the mode is 2.

Range:
  • The difference between the largest and smallest values in a data set.
  • Not an average; it indicates the spread of the data.
  • Example: For the data set 2, 4, 6, 8, the range is 8 - 2 = 6.
